photo of the day (clare is 12)

I’m playing catch-up here because I haven’t been able to blog for a long time. There has been so much going on that I haven’t had a chance to post. But I didn’t want to let the fact that Clare turned 12 on August 26th.

We celebrated with a Mother-Daughter day. We had planned for a trip to the Aquarium and a movie but got such a late start that we had to settle for lunch and the Aquarium instead. No biggie. We went to the Sono Seaport in South Norwalk for lunch so we could sit out by the water.

This guy was sitting on a pier next to one of the tables and watching people eat. He was huge and very brazen and I was glad Clare and I weren’t sitting close to the railing where he was perched.

This is the main reason we wanted to go to the Aquarium. Meerkats. Isn’t he adorable? I’ve yet to figure out how a Meerkat exhibit fits in to an Aquarium theme of any kind but still. They are so tiny and cute. Much smaller than they appeared on Meerkat Manor.

Clare got a chance to view the Meerkats up close and personal but I wasn’t crawling into the tiny tunnel for that view. We stayed and watched the Meerkats scurry and dig and scurry and dig some more before heading out to see the other exhibits, most of which we’ve seen many times over the years of visiting the Maritime Aquarium.

Here’s Clare trying out for the role as Captain Ahab.

We watched the seals get fed and the otters get a treat. We sat and watched the jellies rise up to the top of their large cylindrical tank and fall back to the bottom again.

We stopped and rested a bit by the shark tank and watched the huge fish and sharks swim lazily by.

The high point of Clare’s day came when she found a small bird hopping around the back of the Aquarium. Clare held out her finger and it climbed on and stayed for a pet or two before she put it back down and it hopped away.

After we had seen all there was to see, we headed over to Crumbs for some birthday cupcakes, came home to feed and let the dogs out, and then headed to our favorite Mexican Restaurant for a birthday dinner with Dad and Nick.

My baby is 12. I can’t believe she’s growing up so very fast. I’m so glad we spent her birthday together.
