Nick is taking the Iowa tests for the next 3 days with a group of homeschoolers. Having taking an uncommon approach to my children’s education, they haven’t been exposed to standardized testing over the course of their school careers. Waldorf schools do not administer standardized tests. With the approach of high school, we thought exposing him to the joy of testing plus the additional benefit of a getting a sense of what he “knows” would be the right thing to do.
Ahh, I can hear it now. Unschoolers will be wondering why we are bothering and schoolers will be wondering what took us so long. But as this isn’t really a homeschool blog, I’m not planning on defending our choices here, just setting the stage for why I was standing in the parking lot of the Southbury Baptist Church at 8:30 in the morning with a blue sky filled with a mix of grey and white clouds and a weathered white cross that punctuated the blue like an exclamation point. Sometimes when you look at the world through the camera in your hand, the best image is the one that’s right in front of you at the time.
