photo of the day (valentine’s day eve)

I’m not one for superstition. I don’t believe that just because it is a Friday and the calendar date reads “13” that we should all stay in bed, hope for the best and wait for the day to pass. But as it turns out, that might have been a pretty good plan.

My daughter went to school looking forward to the annual all school skating trip. It should have been a really fun day that ended with everyone saying their goodbyes and wishing each other a good vacation. Instead, because of a pervasive issue of bullying that has never been adequately addressed, an incident in the play yard in which my daughter was called horrible names and hit with sticks resulted in a boy getting hurt and having to go to the ER for several stitches.

My daughter feels horrible that she was the cause of his injuries. When I picked her up, she was crying that it was “all her fault.” Then she admitted that she had reacted in anger as the boys and another girl from her class had surrounded her and were calling her names and prodding her with sticks.

I just hope that these bullies are held responsible and that this doesn’t become another chance to blame and punish the victim. It isn’t the first time and it wasn’t “good-natured teasing.” It was out and out bullying and it shouldn’t be tolerated.

Now we wait to see how the school will handle this. Needless to say, it will put a bit of a damper on our vacation.
