Photo of the Day (Connecticut Sheep and Wool Festival)
The kids and I headed off this morning to the Connecticut Sheep and Wool Festival held in Vernon, CT. I have always wanted to go to a Sheep and Wool Festival and never managed to get to one. There’s a big one in my area, The New York Sheep and Wool Festival, held in Rhinebeck, NY. Last year’s was held right after I had surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon. I didn’t think hobbling around the festival grounds in a cast would be a great way to spend a day so I took a pass on going. When the weather yesterday looked like it would “festival appropriate,” I decided it was about time I finally went to one and we headed on our way.
You might be wondering why I have a picture of a Great Egret at the top of a post about a sheep and wool festival. Well, we passed the Lonetown Marsh on our way out of Redding and I spotted him out of the corner of my eye. I couldn’t let the chance for a shot of him pass (and Nick said that it was the right thing to do in the spirit of photography) so I turned around and we stopped long enough to take a few snaps of him before heading back towards our original destination.
As you can imagine, at a Sheep and Wool Festival, you find plenty of sheep. Also, sheep dogs, alpacas, and rabbits. Nick took a couple of cute bunny pics but none of mine came out too impressive. Nick also took pictures of the other item you find plenty of at a sheep and wool festival: wool. I didn’t take any pictures of wool but I bought plenty. You’ll have to pester Nick to post his pictures if you want to see any cute bunny shots or shots of wool.
Funny, one of the things I didn’t expect at a sheep and wool festival was that not only would sheep be featured in that sheep shearing, sheep herding kind of way but that they would also be the main item on the festival cafe’s menu. I had some amazing lamb stew and the kids both had lamb burgers. Yummy! (But kind of weird in a “Aren’t they cute and delicious at the same time” kind of way.)
Anyway, here are a few more shots that I took at the festival, including the obligatory “It’s spring, let’s take flower pictures” shot of the day. Hope you enjoy them! And now that I have one Sheep and Wool Festival under my belt, come this October, by hook or by crook, I’m heading to Rhinebeck!
